Aaron Fairfax Smith, son of Peter Smith of Caswell County, North Carolina
Aaron Fairfax Smith (son of Peter and Jemima Smith), born in
North Carolina in 1783; died April 12, 1867. His tombstone states that he was 83 years of
age at the time of death. Both he and his wife were buried in Dering Cemetery ,
later known as McDougal
Cemetery at Paradise , Kentucky .
Aaron Fairfax Smith married Judith
Strum, daughter of Pioneer Leonard Strum (or Strom). Her birth
date was July 20, 1792 .
She died June 18, 1860 .
Rothert, in his History of Muhlenberg County, 1913, says that
Paradise is about a mile from Old Airdie and is built on land first settled by
Pioneer Leonard Strum. He and his sons, Jacob and Henry (Henry married
Susannah Smith, daughter of William Wigginton Smith), opened up a farm and also conducted the first
store. They also operated a boat
landing. Aaron Fairfax Smith was a farmer in
Muhlenberg County and, seemingly, a prosperous one.
He and Judith had these
children of which a record is found. There
may have been others.

Lucinda Smith, daughter of William Wigginton Smith
Lucinda (Lucy) Smith (daughter of
William Wigginton Smith), born 1804 or 1805; married January 2, 1832 , William Bell (born 1807 or
1809).
Muhlenberg Census Report for 1850 states that William Bell was a
farmer. Children in that year were:
Martha Bell 17
William T. Bell 16
Sarah Bell 15
Mary S. Bell 13 Evidently Mary S. and Burrel M.
Burrel M. Bell 13 were twins
Eliza A. Bell 9
John Bell 7
Nancy Bell 4
All the children except Nancy were attending school and every member of
the family was a native Kentuckian.
Susannah Smith, daughter of William Wigginton Smith
Susannah Smith (daughter of William Wigginton Smith) born April 14, 1802; married Henry Strom, probably in 1822, in Muhlenberg County. Both are buried in Old Paradise
Cemetery on Green River (three miles from Old Airdie Iron Works). Henry died November 23, 1840, age 53 years
(born 1787). Sussana U.
(or V.) died September 3,
1839 , age 37 years, four months, and seventeen days (born April 17, 1802 ).
In the year 1850 three Strom children lived with the family of Thompson B. Smith (Susannah Strom's brother). They were:
Louisa Strom, born
1834 or 1835
Eudoxy Strom, born 1835 or 1836
Nancy Strom, born
1836 or 1837
William Wigginton Smith bequeathed "to my grandchildren, the
children of my daughter Susan Strom--except Margaret Cundiff--the remaining sixth part of such proceeds amongst them
to be equally divided. I do not bequeath
any sum or property to my Granddaughter Margaret Cundiff." Most likely he had given to her her full share
when she was married. This seems to state clearly that Susan and Henry
Strom also had a daughter named Margaret. Very likely there were other children older
than the ones named above.
James G. Smith, son of William Wigginton Smith
James G. Smith (son of William Wigginton Smith) married Sally Cundiff in Muhlenberg County on November 23, 1821 . The marriage of a James G. Smith to Mary F.
Bell on October 23, 1842 , is
recorded. Perhaps further research will
reveal whether this is father and son or the same man.
Thompson Bailey Smith, son of William Wigginton Smith
Thompson Bailey Smith (son of William Wigginton Smith), born 1813 or 1814, was a farmer. In 1860 his real estate was valued at $2,400
and personal property at $3,000. His wife, Mary W., a Kentuckian, was likely born in 1823 or
1824. The names of their children were:
Susan M., b.
1843 or 1844 (one Susan Smith m. M.
H. Haltsly, February 13, 1868)
Mary E., b.
1844 or 1845 (one Mary Smith m. H.
J. Dukes, October 5, 1864 )
William R., b. 1846 or 1847 (William Riley Smith m. Martha Elizabeth Edward, August 13,1866)
Samuel B., b.
1848 or 1849
Annie E., b.
1851 or 1852 (m. John D. Casebier)
James I., b.
1853 or 1854
Thompson B., b. 1855 or 1856
In 1880, Thompson B. Smith and Thompson
B., Jr., were living with Thompson, Sr.'s, daughter Annie and her husband
John D. Casebier. It was in that census report
that he stated that both his father and his mother were born in Virginia. His wife, Mary W., had died between 1870 and 1880.
John D. and Annie E. Casebier were then the parents of three, as
follows:
George, b. 1873 or 1874 (George Casebier married Lulu
Kimmel on
September
26, 1893)
Thompson B., b. 1875 or 1876
Annie B., b. 1880 (one Annie Casebier
married Wilben
Mitchell on
October
17, 1899)
William Bradford Smith, son of William Wigginton Smith
William Bradford Smith, son of William Wigginton Smith, born in Kentucky
in 1808 or 1809. He was a farmer and in
1860 his real estate was valued at $1,200 and his personal property at $5,000. On August 9, 1847 , in Muhlenberg County ,
he married Susan Jackson, whose year of birth was probably 1819 or 1820.
Susan (Jackson) Smith was living in 1860, but the 1870 census gives the
name of William B. Smith's wife as Elizabeth. Presumably Susan died before 1867 for on October 27, 1867 , "W.
B. Smith" married Elizabeth England. It would
appear that the first ten children shown below were those of Susan and that
Charles W. and Eliza Smith were children
of the second wife, Elizabeth England.
William Bradford Smith's children were:
Francis M. (male), b. 1848-9
Martha A., b.
1849 or 1850
Lucinda E., b. 1850 or 1851
William T., b. 1851 or 1852
James H., b.
1852 or 1853
Reuben Edward, b. 1854 or 1855
Tiberius, b.
1856 or 1857
Mary E., b. 1858 or 1859
Elizabeth, b. 1860 or 1861
Robert F. b. 1861 or 1862
Charles W., b. 1868 or 1869
Eliza, b. 1870 or 1871
