John Henderson Smith, son of Elias William Smith, born September 8, 1892, at Ceralvo, Kentucky; married August 12, 1912, in Red Bay, Alabama, Birdie Louis Shaw, born February 7, 1894, in Prentiss County, Mississippi.

This couple moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in October 1916 and lived there until Mr. Smith retired in October 1956.  In the same month, they returned to the South and settled in Tupelo, Mississippi.  For many years, Mr. Smith was employed by the Singer Sewing Machine Company but he was with another company at the time of his retirement.  After retiring, he and Mrs. Smith returned regularly to the annual homecoming at Ceralvo, Kentucky.  They are the parents of only one child, a son, but have been foster parents to several other children.  Their son is:

John Henderson Smith, Jr., born June 9, 1913, presumably in Red Bay, Alabama, who is a fine-looking young man.  On October 6, 1940, he married Jeanette Mae Goudy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Goudy, in the West Florissant Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri.  They have for many years lived in Tupelo, Mississippi, where John, Jr., is in the automobile business.  This couple has no children.

Paulina Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Elias William Smith, born at Ceralvo, Kentucky, October 5, 1887; died April 17, 1956, while in the home of one of her children in Chicago, Illinois.  She is buried at Nelson Creek Cemetery, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.   Paulina married William Arthur Johns, son of                        and Jennie (Pevelar) Johns, on November 4, 1908.  Arthur Johns was born February 3, 1882, at Nelson, Kentucky; died April 29, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, and is buried at Nelson Creek Cemetery.  This family lived at Nelson, Kentucky, and all the children, whose names follow, were born there:

Elenor Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Jesse Baker Smith, born May 22, 1921, in Evanston; on November 4, 1936, she married Thomas Alton Hutchinson, born November 30, 1916, in Evanston.  Their children:

Ronald Glen George, son of Phyllis Marie Smith, born December 20, 1941, in Evanston; married Judith Ann Porter on December 16, 1964.  Ronald received Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University in Asian Studies.  In 1966 he began graduate studies at Harvard University and in June 1967 graduated with a Master of Science degree. He was subsequently employed by the First National City Bank of New York and later sent to Hong Kong, B. C. C.  Ronald returned to the United States in November 1969 and is now the Director of International Banking Affairs for Zions First National Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Ronald and Judith's children are;

Carol Gaye Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith

Carol Gaye Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born March 14, 1963.  Carol takes piano and baton twirling lessons.  She is a member of the Sweet Cookie Club (4-H) and is club reporter.  A local newspaper carries her report on each week's meeting.

Robert Rollins Smith, son of Claude Gerrard Smith, born March 4, 1955.  He is a husky and valuable football player.  On the track team, he has also competed in the discus throw, shot put and javelin throw. Robert is an excellent student, having been on the honor roll every term since junior high school.  He has been accepted by Weber State College and will enter there in the fall of 1973.  He was to have received his Eagle Scout badge at a court of honor on February 18, 1973.  In the church, Robert serves as a member of both the Ward and Stake Youth Council and holds several offices in youth organizations.  He has a fine baritone voice and in 1972 was privileged to sing in the All Church Music Festival, a 3,000-voice youth chorus.

Eileen Marie Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born March 23, 1953.  In high school Eileen was active in student government; she was a cheer leader, Junior Prom and Homecoming royalty.  She has a beautiful soprano voice and has sung solos and in chorus.  In college she has participated in a service club, acappella choir and madrigal choir.  This year she is Relief Society president and, during the first semester, song leader for Valkyries, the service organization.

In 1972 the Valkyries won first place trophy at the Homecoming songfest.  The songs used were ones Eileen and her mother had written during the summer for the occasion.  

At Logan, Utah, on December 27, 1972, Eileen married Melvin Charles Hale, of Fairview, Wyoming.  Both are sophomore students at Ricks College at Rexburg, Idaho. 

David Leon Smith, son of Claude Gerrard Smith

David Leon Smith (twin), son of Claude Gerrard Smith, born May 22, 1951, is a twin to Dorothy Ann (above). David, "the fleet-footed one," participated in basketball, track, and football while in high school and during the first two years of college.  He is now in his senior year at Weber State College, with a major in economics.

           

David married Alice Evelyn Berg, of Ogden, on June 23, 1971, at Logan, Utah.  They have one son:

Dorothy Ann Smith (twin), daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born May 22, 1951.  Dorothy attended Weber State College and later graduated from Stevens-Henger Business College, where she completed a secretarial course in December 1972.  She is employed as a secretary by two political science professors at Weber State College.  

Dorothy was married on March10, 1972, to Carl Edison Ellis, Jr., at Salt Lake City.  The marriage was later annulled by mutual consent.  On November 20, 1972, she married Barry Saylor at Elbo, Nevada.  Barry is assistant manager of a grocery store in Ogden.  He has completed two years at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.  

Dorothy's one child is:

Diana Jeanne Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith

Diana Jeanne Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born July 20, 1947.  Diana was salutorian of her high school class and received an academic scholarship to the University of Wyoming, where she went directly from high school for the summer quarter.  She returned for the school year 1965-66. 

On June 6, 1966, she was married to Donald Edward Earnshaw, a University of Wyoming student from Lexington, Massachusetts.  Early in 1968 they moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming, where Don works for the Wyoming State Employment Service.  He has continued his studies in psychology and counseling and has credits beyond graduation requirements but has not filled the foreign language requirement necessary for a B.A. degree.  Children are:

Janet Ruth Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith

Janet Ruth Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born June 22, 1944.  In high school she participated in student government, band, chorus and cheerleading.  She was Junior Prom Queen.  Janet attended Utah State University and the University of Wyoming, receiving a Bachelor's degree in math education from the latter.  She taught in Lovell (Wyoming) High School for one year, then moved to El Paso, Texas, where she worked as a computer programmer for the El Paso Natural Gas Company.

On September 1, 1967, Janet married Lt. John Walter Carlton, in El Paso, who is a career soldier and holds the rank of captain in the Army Air Force.  Ft. Bliss, at El Paso, is his home base, but the family is now stationed at Schofield Base in Hawaii.  Janet's and John's children are:

Melvin Claude Smith, son of of Claude Gerrard Smith

Melvin Claude Smith, son of of Claude Gerrard Smith, born July 25, 1941; married Renita Lanette Prather on September 7, 1965, in Salt Lake City.  

He attended the University of Wyoming for one year.  In October 1960, he left the United States on a two and one-half year mission to Uruguay for the Latter Day Saints Church.  While returning from the mission he visited other South American countries and Mexico.

After returning to the United States, in May 1963, he enrolled at the Utah State University to continue his studies in business administration and Spanish grammar.  

He enlisted for military service on January 16, 1964, and went to Ft. Ord, California.  From there he went to Ft. Holabird, Maryland, Military Intelligence School and then was assigned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.  In March 1965 he entered Officer Candidate School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where he received second lieutenant bars on August 31, 1965.  He returned to Ft. Holabird for officer training in Military Intelligence School.  Late in 1965 he was sent to Vietnam for one year.  When he returned to the United States he went back to Ft. Holabird and became an instructor in military intelligence.  In August 1968, Melvin resigned from the Army with the rank of captain.  

He enrolled in July 1969 at Weber State College and received a Bachelor's degree in business administration in 1971.  He has taken graduate work at the University of Utah and is nearing the requirements for a Master's degree.  His wife, Renita, has completed her sophomore year at Weber State College.  Melvin is now president of a family corporation, Treasure Foods, Inc.

Beth Louise Smith, daughter of Claude Gerrard Smith, born September 10, 1939; married Joe Johnson on March 21, 1959 (they were later divorced).  Their children:

Louise married Eugene Lee Choate on June 1, 1966, a widower with three children. They became the parents of one daughter, LeAnn Choate, born July 3, 1969.  They were divorced in late 1972.  

Louise attended Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah, and continued her education at Utah State University, in Logan, from which she received a Bachelor's degree in June 1966.  She has taught at South Junior High School in Ogden and at the Utah State Industrial School at Ogden.  She is working on her Master's degree.

Claude Gerrard Smith, son of Jesse Baker Smith, was born October 20, 1916, at Evanston, Wyoming.  On December 15, 1938, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he married Myrtle Easton Rollins, born September 2, 1918, in Evanston, the eldest daughter of George Leon Rollins and Margaret Viola Easton.  Myrtle grew up on a farm near Lyman, Wyoming.

Claude has for 33 years been a locomotive engineer on the Union Pacific Railroad.  He joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1928, and except for a few years, has been active in scouting.  Since he went back into it in 1948, he has worked hard with the scouts in his ward and since 1953 has served as director of the Mountain Men Hike, a rugged week's adventure for scouts in the Jim Bridger Council.  The Mountain Men Hike is an experience never forgotten by the scouts who take it.  The hike takes place in the wilderness area in the top of the Wind River Mountains in western Wyoming.  These mountains run southeast from near the Jackson Hole area to a bit beyond Lander.

& Myrtle Easton Rollins

On November 20, 1971, Claude was the recipient of the first Jim Bridger Award at the first annual recognition dinner of the Wyuta District (Wyoming) of the Jim Bridger Council for scouters working at the unit level.  At the Jim Bridger Council's recognition dinner on February 3, 1973, Claude was recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award the Council can bestow on a scouter and a very great honor.

Claude is interested in genealogy, as is his mother (Sarah Ellen Gerrard Smith), and continues to do research at every opportunity.  He is head librarian, in charge of the Evanston Branch of the Genealogical Society library in Salt Lake City, Utah, the largest library of its kind in the world.  For about ten years he served as chairman of the Stake Genealogical Committee, and before that he served for several years as chairman of the Ward Genealogical Committee.  In the latter capacity he organized and taught many genealogy classes.  As a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Claude served as High Councilman in the Woodruff Stake for ten years, as bishop of the Evanston Second Ward for five years and, since 1963, he has been financial clerk in the Second Ward.

Myrtle (Rollins) Smith was born in Evanston, Wyoming, at the home of her mother's parents, William and Margaret Hood Easton, who were Scottish immigrants.  Grandfather Easton worked in the coal mines in the Evanston area and was for many years mine foreman.  At the time of Myrtle's birth her father, George Leon Rollins, was a soldier stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, awaiting transportation to France where he spent eight or nine months' duty in World War I.  George Leon's parents were James Watson and Harriet Ann Eyre Rollins.  He was a farmer and Myrtle, with her two sisters and three brothers, grew up on a farm near Lyman, Wyoming.  Myrtle's chief interests and skills lie in the homemaking field.  She learned the art of cooking from "experts" on both sides of her family.  An accomplished seamstress, she has taught her daughters to sew as well as cook.  For a dozen years she has been 4-H Club leader, and has taught classes in genealogy and family relations to the Laurel Class in the M. I. A.  At present, she teaches a Sunday School class in Gospel Doctrine.  In addition, Myrtle sings as soloist, in duets and choirs.  She estimates that she has sung at 300 or 400 funerals.

David Merrill Smith, son of Jesse Baker Smith, born August 17, 1914, Evanston; died, unmarried, February 28, 1943, at Ft. Lewis, Washington, while in military service.  He had suffered a ruptured appendix that was erroneously diagnosed as something else.  His burial was in Evanston, Wyoming.
